Start Deutsch 1 is a German exam for adults. It certifies that candidates have acquired very basic language skills and corresponds to the first level (A1) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Courses at a German university are generally held in German. This means that, in order to be admitted to the course, you will need to complete a test to demonstrate your language skills. You can do this by taking one of two different language proficiency tests:

  • the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber" (DSH - German language test for admission to university for international applicants): You can only complete the DSH in Germany.

  • the German as a foreign language test (TestDaF)You can complete the TestDaF in your home country.

There are ways in which you don't have to take a German language test. These include the following:

  • By attending a German International school and
    • completing your "Abitur" - final examinations at a German-speaking school, or
    • completing the DSD Level II test ("Kultusministerkonferenz" (KMK) German "Sprachdiplom")

  • Passing the Goethe-Institut's  "Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom" exam (see my offering below)
